Father Fish, also known as Louis Foxwell, is a seasoned fish keeper with 70 years of experience. His simple, easy, and guaranteed methods ensure healthy, happy tropical fish in your aquarium.
Louis adopted the role of Father Fish many years ago when he opened a tropical fish store as a retirement business. Prior to this, he served as a missionary for 25 years, following in his father's footsteps by ministering to a congregation of deaf worshipers. Louis fondly recalls his grandmother in Berlin, Germany, who inspired his love for fish keeping as a child.
As a founder and original board member of the National Aquarium, Louis played a significant role in its development, serving as chair of the Community Relations Committee and participating in the Search Committees. With extensive experience across nearly every level of the fish industry, Father Fish offers a wealth of knowledge and products, including plants, soil supplements, and more, to enhance your aquarium experience.

Keeping Your Aquarium Smelling Fresh: Top Tips For Odor Control
What makes a fish tank stink? An aquarium that smells bad is not healthy. A stinky tank is a dying tank. An aquarium will die when it is not able to maintain the life of the plants and animals in it. So what kills aaquariums. There are 2 primary causes. Both are a result of bad advice. The first cause of stinky tank is excess food. Even if all the food is eaten the fish may create more waste than the biological activity in the tank is able to covert to energy. Waste that is not converted to energy rots and stinks. The main cause of inadequate biological activity is chemical treatment of the tank. Father Fish believes there are no chemicals that are critical for the health of an aquarium. Most chemicals are doesd in the tank to kill something. This creates death. Death is the opposite of life. Killing living organisms is not an appropriate method to maintain a healthy, living aqurium.
Build a dirted deep sustrate according to Father Fish instructions found in the Father Fish Shoal. Create a good web using Father Fish's techniques. Feed less than daily high quality foode in very small amounts. These procedures, followed carefully will mean your tank will be sweet smelling and thriving with life. and noever, never stink.

Father Fish never feeds his fish. But they are never hungry. His aquarium has a built in food web that grows food for his fish. The food web is at the forefront of aquarium research, focusing on using wild-collected leaves from lakes, rivers, and other water bodies as food for microscopic life. Father Fish challenges the conventional belief that aquariums must be sterile environments devoid of ...

Father fish is why i have a tank right now with happy fish
Is it okay for us to use a water filter in the aquarium
I might be overly cautions but do you think if i leave some indian almond leaves in a bucket of water from my local lake would that work just as good instead of using leaves straighht from the pond
I used to have a fish tank but it was all gravel and fake plants, so one time I decided to put in 2 live plants. I ended up screwing up the plants ant they turned a clear brown. After watching this I see where I went wrong and want to try a new tank that is all natural where everything produces for itself. I have one question though. Could I go down to the creek and the n get back to my house with a few plants and immediately put them into my tank or is there something in between I need to do? Also could I use top soil from a big box store for my mud layer
😍😍😍❤️
what about the akadama? I used it until now in my betta aquariums, but I would like to try your method. Would it be better to remove the akadama or could I use it as the soil part along with real plant soil?
Thanks from India👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for i hv so many questions in mind and your give an awesome answers i think now i am on right way so thank you for beautiful and usefull information thanks a lot.. Love from 🇮🇳 india🇮🇳👳 Namste 🙏🏻
What if, to start a substrate, you simply mix living river silt with sand (without soil)? The proportions are 80% sand and 20% silt.
It will deplete in about a year.
@@FatherFish It's not a problem. Fish waste and mulch will continue this process. The purpose of using silt is to start bioprocesses and populate the sand with benthos.
Thanks father fish... Amazing video!!! Can you do a video for intestinal worm? 🙏🙏🙏 Thanks from Italy ❤❤❤
feed fresh crushed garlic once every few months to control internal parasite.
@@FatherFish thanks Father Fish ❤️❤️❤️
When I was a kid, I had a betta that I kept in a tank that was around 5 gallons. There were a few floating plants, which I think we harvested from a nearby lake. I don’t remember how long, but he happily swam around that take for years. (He had what I’d call medium-sized fins for a male betta, and seemed able to get around his tank alright.) If I have another betta, I will probably not go much smaller than 3 gallons, because I want to be able to create a stimulating environment for the fish, with 2-3 different kinds of plants and maybe a bit of easy-to-navigate-around hardscape.
But my water temperature is already 87F naturally !!! And all of my fish caught it what should i do?
That is not possible
Ahhh! Look at all that fry!! So cool!! What about fish like Geophagus? You don't have issues with them uprooting plants when they dig? Not that I have room for them. I can't do big tanks for health reasons, bad back😔. But I've always liked earth eater fish and always thought I'd I ever could have a big tank I'd love keeping Cichlids.
not an issue
❤
This is so wholesome
Father fish, is it important that the light of the aquarium cames from the hight?
yes
I have a 3 inch sandbed in my largest tank. I recently put another couple inches of Eco Complete over the top of that. My plants are doing well, but now I’m wondering if this was not a good idea, since you’re talking about a sand cap?
Ecocomplete will leach nutrients into the water. Cap it with an inch of sand.
I still can't figure out Discord.
If you read the rules you will find the magic word.
@@FatherFish I did get in. I just don't know how to use it. I think I'll look on youtube for a guide. That's the best way for me to learn.
Heck, you were just a kid back then!
I unintentionally ended up with bladder snails in my tank. They reproduced quickly. Will they over populated and become a problem for fish?
no
Is there a risk of introducing disease or parasites when introducing detritus from the wild?
no more than not doing it. There is more likelihood of disease from a sterile tank with no outasode biological material. It is a question of balance.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge . Substrates (for example tropica aquarium substrate) that is commercially available can be used as the supplement?
As part of it, yes. It still needs organics - peat and coposted material.
Love you Father Fish, thanks to sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us ❤❤❤.My first aquarium ever and is just perfect , i just fallow your advice and omg what a gorgeous little environment i have. Thanks so much
Finally somebody that knows the truth about beta fish
Thankyou for the educational videos on maintaining a natural tank the natural way. I needed reasurance on what to do and not to do. Eg. No chemicals are beneficial, water evaporation and topping off tank, adding vitamin C to remove chemicals in tap water. 😊 Please keep reasuring us as the pet shop push water changes for high nitrite levels every 2 days and adding store chemicals. I didnt, i added more plants. Is there any benefit in testing your water? If so what do you test for in a father fish method tank?
I test to know what my Ph is coming out of the tap. I test nothing else.
Thanks for spreading all your info💯
@FatherFish ... I feel almost stupid asking this question but do you feed them? if yes, what kind of food?
I use the bestg quality food I can find and feed once a day or less in very small amounts.
I enjoyed listening to you on this video and I will follow your advice, thank you again.
Well explained father fish.
My respects to Father Fish!
Please dont call forest of living trees as woods... Its very bad... Just like calling living humans as corpse
Wood is alive and it is dead. Corpses are never alive.
@@FatherFish 😅 sir that's how English language has a meaning, in our language Telugu we say Vruksham for a tree and chekka for wood.. 2 different things..
I actually used to worry about algae but learned that it’s just an over abundance of recourses, it does make the tank look unclean, but nature isn’t clean, a clean tank is likely an unstable tank. As long as it doesn’t go crazy I don’t mind because it helps my ecosystem do better.
I allow some dead leaves to stay in the aquarium I always thought it would only benefit the aquarium if I don’t leave too many in.
Guess what I have a bunch of baby fishes I'm over the moon I must be doing something right thankyou FF for your expertise😊 ❤❤❤
I have 4 fully grown fancy goldfish.. how to switch it to a natural tank... I need suggestions
Just do it. They will love it.
Hello sir any filter should be kept for a natural tank?
I like sponge filters.
@@FatherFish whether canister can be kept father? If sponge filter is kept, whether it should be cleaned on regular intervals?
A few months ago, I set up a 15-liter aquarium with my son, just like you explain in this video, all natural with soil, plants, rocks, leaves, and driftwood. And indeed, the fish are thriving better than when they were in the aquarium we bought them from. Mother Nature is wise; thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Can you please explain more about reusing old aquarium water and putting it in a bucket to settle at the bottom and reuse? Is that really good? Because I see many people change 20-25% of the water with new water. Discard the water that was sucked from the bottom of the old fish tank. I watched the fish dad's video talking about keeping all the old fish farming water because it is gold, so I asked how many days that water can be reused after letting it settle for a while, and whether it can be reused. Is it really better than new well water when raising advanced fish? Please let me know the answer, thank you sir
Water is water. The water you dringktoday has been on earth since the beginning of water on the earth. There is no such thng as new water.
Ty Father Fish for all of the time and thoughtful and most importanty clear fish keeping advice. Have a great weekend 💖🐠
I have irl things going atm so itll be a bit before i get a tank set up. But i love the videos it reminds me of school but way better ❤😊
My favorite saltwater aquarium supply place. And my favorite freshwater aquarium supply place is the creek.
My tanks smell simular to a natural lake . Everything is healthy
Since I build my first 15 gallon tank they said 1 month you need change the water but due to my busines in work, I never clean them and change for almost 3 months. And my tank are still the same 6 tetras and 3 guppies with lots of snails. They are still the same clean and crystal clear. Thanks God I watched this video ❤
This is total bullsh**
According to your skill level.
Late to the show & tell as my usual. I always get caught up on replay tho. Wonderful tanks, thank you to all who shared. Great news about your new place! Your excitement in this new venture shows. Lovin Life! Thank you for all you’re doing to promote this wonderful hobby and taking us along☺☮❤🐠🦐🪴
I also I ordered plants from you but they came half rotten. I tried to save them, but then they messed up my tanks. I had to throw them all away.
Did you ask me to replace them? I always replace plants that the USPS has delayed.
@@FatherFish no I didn’t so I would really appreciate that. What do I need to do?
I’m trying to send a picture, but I’m unable to
U can alwsys join the discord and send that way
I just set up two new tanks with dirt and layer of sand my plans are all dying
Did you push the stems or roots into the dirt layer? In a new tank that will kill them. They should only be planted 1" in the sand.
@@FatherFish I remembered you stressing that point so I kept them in the sand.
I've always been really critical of your channel but this is one of my favourite videos and really interesting about the vitamin c I thought it would be too acidic if not in a huge system what is the effect on say 40galons ? per 1000mg? I think that your whole method is the ideal method by far. but why wouldn't you remove the chlorine and chloramine first to avoid wiping out any of the biome in your tank or doesn't it matter when it's so diluted? I have 2 tropical tanks and I'm the same they were setup the only time I've done a water change was when I was moving house. I always top up with rodi so I don't raise the tds above natural levels and have shrimp substrate and coral bone for minerals and a plant on top to take up any excess nutrients. my tanks look as clean as any other. only need to clean the algae off once a year. been running like this for over 5 years. it has never ever seen any medication same with any of the materials inside.
TDS is variable based on plant absorption of dissolved minerals. I never add rodi water to insure tds is not lowered. Vit C has marginal effect on Ph. Chloramine is sufficiently low that immediate reduction reduces impact on living oganisms to a negligable level. Really critical? Really?
@FatherFish very interesting I might try the vitamin c. the only reason I used rodi is it is on hand and when water evaporates the dissolved solids remain its only pure h²o leaving the tank so I am just replenishing that as the rain does. I also only keep shrimp snails and plants in my freshwater setups currently. I also don't test my tds even though I really should especially to see how much the plants are consuming. would you recommend treating the water with vitamin c before adding it to be on the safe side or would it make no difference on a small water change? it does remind me of topping up straight from the tap when working in aquariums only one pretreated the water but that was a highend store and everything was heated in barrels beforehand as well. and yeah I have been in the past because at first I thought it was purely old thinking and carelessness until I watched multiple videos and your right watching 10 of your videos despite being the same message really shows that it's so much more tbh. less so on the saltwater tank even though it's ideal it just hurt a bit as a reef keeper but after that I decided to collect sand from the bottom of a rockpool and add to one of my reef tanks and they amount of microscopic life that added is incredible. the tank was at the point of being shut down because of dinoflagellates there appears to be some type of worm feasting on them which if that's the case it would be an incredible breakthrough as far as treating dinoflagellates goes if they outpace them
